Move-In 2009
Welcome to Eastern! We are excited that you'll be joining us in 2009 to pursue your academic endeavors. As part of your journey, we recognize that technology will play a critical role in your success.
We have created this page to try and help answer any questions that you might have about the move-in process relating to things such as computers, the Internet, etc.
Important Information
There is often anxiety about moving to campus. To try and relieve some of this tension, we have compiled a list of the most common technology-related items that you might need in your room.
Move-In Checklist
What to bring:
Moving on campus is an exciting time! To make your computer, telephone and other technology setup as easy as possible, you may want to bring the following items with you on move-in day:
What NOT to bring:
We request that you leave the following items at home, as they are not allowed in the residence halls due to their interference with our network:
- Routers, both wired and wireless (including Apple Airports)
- 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz cordless phones (we recommend 900MHz cordless phones)
Connecting to the Internet
Very important! This section covers the procedures of connecting your computer to our residential network (Ethernet and wireless) for the first time. The first two items you can do before you move to campus and will make your connection to the network faster!
First, remove all antivirus software (including security suites that include firewalls, antispyware, etc.) on your computer in the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. You will be installing the antivirus software EKU supplies. This is mandatory for you to be able to access the Internet on campus.
Next, be sure your operating system (Windows or Apple Mac) is updated. These updates must include all service packs and important updates the manufacturer pushes to users.
After you check in to your residence hall, with your computer setup but turned off:
- Use your Ethernet cable to connect your computer to one of the Ethernet jacks in your room (there are two in every room except in Brockton apartments). Turn on your computer.
- Open your Intenet browser and try to open an off-campus website such as www.webmd.com or www.cnet.com. This should cause you to be redirected to a login page.
- When the login page loads, you will be asked to enter your Ekey username and password.
- The next several pages will guide you through the remainder of the connection process. Complete step-by-step instructions | Fall 2009 PC Connect Guide
The process should be very simple to work through. However, if you experience difficulties during any part of the installation, see our Fall 2009 Install Fair schedule.
Do you want to connect to the wireless in the residence halls too? First, you should connect to the Ethernet because you will need the same software to connect to the wireless. Second, you computer must meet the minimum requirements for the campus wireless in order to connect. After you login to Cisco Clean Access you will be able to connect to the Ethernet and wireless in your hall and the wireless around campus too.
Do you want to connect other devices to the campus network? You can connect your iPhone to the campus wireless. You can also connect your game consoles, that have an Ethernet connection, to that wired connection in your room. Wireless is not available for game consoles. Complete step-by-step instructions
